Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi

In America's Gulf Coast region, grounded oil tankers are being broken down for parts by crews of young people. Nailer, a teenage boy, works the light crew, scavenging for copper wiring just to make quota-and hopefully live to see another day. But when, by luck or by chance, he discovers an exquisite clipper ship beached during a recent hurricane, Nailer faces the most important decision of his life: Strip the ship for all it's worth or rescue its lone survivor, a beautiful and wealthy girl who could lead h

King, Ship, and Sword

Typically, Lewrie wrecks havoc on his King's foes while at sea and creates mayhem, most of it quite unintentionally of course, for himself and just about everyone else who comes into contact with him (or who just happens to be sailing In Sight) while on land. In fact, in this adventure one might even speculate that Lewrie, nigh single-handedly, is responsible for bringing England and France back into conflict in June of 1803.

Plague Ship by Clive Cussler

Once again the Cussler novels mix comic book type fiction with real life hitech military scenarios so well. In the dependably entertaining if less than top-notch fifth Oregon Files thriller from bestseller Cussler and Du Brul (after Skeleton Crew), Capt. Juan Cabrillo, who heads the Corporation, a covert military company for hire, and the multifaceted crew of the Oregon, a high-tech ship disguised to look like a tramp steamer, take on a group known as the Responsivists. The Responsivists publicly espouse a

The Coffin Ship By Peter Tonkin

There's only one area I thought was a bit weak, which is providing a realistic ocean-going atmosphere. A master like Alistair Maclean will have you smelling the salt air, seeing the rusting paint peeling up, and feeling the sway and roll of the ship. Tonkin never quite achieves that. The very short biography in the book notes he's a school teacher, and gives no mention of any time spent crewing ships at sea. I suspect the lack of first-hand experience accounts for this shortfall. There are also a few detai

The Destroyer Campbeltown (Anatomy of the Ship)

The destroyer Campbeltown is most famous for her part in the commando raid on the St Nazaire drydock in 1942. Built as the USS Buchanan (DD131)- and later renamed Campbelton - she was one of over 270 flush-decked destroyers put into service towards the end of World War I. When Britain appealed to America in 1940 for the transfer of fifty vessels for anti-submarine duty

A Ship Made of Paper

Having finished the novel, I was troubled by the character Daniel, however. Although his lover Kate continuously describes him as a good man, I'm not at all sure he is. I believe the moral question is this: does anyone have a right to insist on getting whatever he thinks he wants, no matter who gets hurt or destroyed along the way, in order that he can have an all consuming affair? There are of course similarities in Daniel and the young man in ENDLESS LOVE who, as I recall, in a fit of passionate love, bu
